The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 He created man from a clot. 2 Read, for your Lord is most beneficent, 3 Who taught by the pen - 4 Hath taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 Because he sees himself free from want. 7 Surely to your Lord is your return. 8 HAST THOU ever considered him who tries to prevent 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 Bethinkest thou, if he is himself guided, 11 or orders piety? 12 Bethinkest thou, if he belieth and turneth away? 13 Does he not know that Allah sees? 14 Let him beware! If he does not desist, We will drag him by the forelock -- 15 By the lying, the sinful forelock. 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 We will now call the guards! 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
