We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 But when he came to them with Our signs, lo! they laughed at them. 47 And not a sign We shewed them but it was greater than the like thereof; and We laid hold of them with the torment that haply they might turn. 48 And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way. 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 Am I not better than this contemptible (man), who can scarcely make things clear (because of the impediment of his speech)? 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 So he made his people unsteady, and they obeyed him; surely they were an ungodly people. 54 Then when they displeased Us, We inflicted a retribution on them, so We drowned them all together, 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
