The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 arise and give warning! 2 Thy Lord magnify, 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 and do not think that by doing such deeds, you have done a great favor to God. 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day. 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and children living in his presence, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
