A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Cause it ye to grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
