He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and then turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 And hath fear, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 uplifted, purified, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 noble and purified. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 then, He will raise him when He wills. 22 Indeed, he has not fulfilled that which He has ordered him. 23 Let man consider his food: 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 and grape vines and vegetables, 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 And thick gardens, 30 fruits, and grass. 31 In order to benefit you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry comes, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
