Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By oath of the (particular) dawn. 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 by the even and the odd, 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 The people of many-columned lram. 7 The like of which were not created in the (other) cities; 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 Who committed inordinacy in the cities, 11 And multiplied therein corruption. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 Enter thou among My servants! 29 And enter into My garden. 30
