A multitude from the ancients. 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)! 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
