We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 But when he showed them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 Of all the miracles which We showed to them the latter ones were greater than the former. We struck them with torment so that perhaps they would return to Us. 48 And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way. 49 But when We removed the Penalty from them, behold, they broke their word. 50 And Pharaoh called out among his people; he said, "O my people, does not the kingdom of Egypt belong to me, and these rivers flowing beneath me; then do you not see? 51 Am I (not) better than him who is contemptible, and cannot even express himself clearly? 52 "Then why are not gold bracelets bestowed on him, or (why) come (not) with him angels accompanying him in procession?" 53 He (Pharaoh) intimidated his nation, so they obeyed him, for they were a sinning nation. 54 But when they roused Our anger We inflicted retributive punishment and drowned them all, 55 and We made them a thing past, and We appointed them for an example to later folk. 56
