The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O thou shrouded in thy mantle, 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And your Lord glorify 3 and purify your robes, 4 stay away from sins 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 And gave him vast wealth. 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 and said: 'This is no more than traced sorcery; 24 This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
