Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha. Mim. 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 enveloping people. That will be a grievous scourge. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 Who said, “Give the bondmen of Allah into my custody; I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger for you.” 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 and I take refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 (Allah said): "Depart you with My slaves by night. Surely, you will be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as it is (quiet and divided). Verily, They are a host to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and fountains they left behind them, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
