۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 Recall what time he said unto his father and his people: what are these images to which ye are cleaving? 52 They said, "We found our fathers worshipping them." 53 He said: "Certainly you and your fathers have all been in manifest error." 54 They asked: "Hast thou come unto us [with this claim] in all earnest - or art thou one of those jesters?" 55 He said: Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them; and I am of those who testify unto that. 56 And [he added to himself.] "By God, I shall most certainly bring about the downfall of your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone away!" 57 He broke them all into pieces, except their great one so that they might return to it. 58 (When the people came to the temple and saw the broken idols) they asked each other, "Who has done this to our gods? He certainly is an unjust person". 59 They said, "We heard a young man mention them who is called Abraham." 60 Said they: Then bring him before the eyes of the people, perhaps they may bear witness. 61 "Did you do this to our gods, O Abraham?" they enquired. 62 He said: But this, their chief hath done it. So question them, if they can speak. 63 So they returned to [blaming] themselves and said [to each other], "Indeed, you are the wrongdoers." 64 But then they relapsed into their former way of thinking and said: "Thou knowest very well that these [idols] cannot speak!" 65 He said, “What! You worship, instead of Allah, one that neither benefits you nor harms you?” 66 Uff to you and to what you worship instead of Allah. Then will you not use reason?" 67 They said, 'Burn him, and help your gods, if you would do aught.' 68 "Turn cold, O fire," We said, "and give safety to Abraham." 69 They had sought to do him harm, but We frustrated them. 70 But We delivered him and (his nephew) Lut (and directed them) to the land which We have blessed for the nations. 71 We bestowed Isaac and then Jacob on him as an additional boon and We made all of them righteous. 72 and appointed them to be leaders guiding by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good deeds, and to perform the prayer, and to pay the alms, and Us they served. 73 And Lut! We vouchsafed unto him judgment and knowledge, and We delivered him out of the city which had been working foul deeds; verily they were a people evil, wicked. 74 And We took him into Our mercy; surely he was of the good. 75
