The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 but We see it near at hand. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 his wife, his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 [As a rule,] whenever misfortune touches him, he is filled with self-pity; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But he who seeks to go beyond this, these it is that go beyond the limits-- 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
