He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because the blind man had come in his august presence. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 to a rich man, 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 And is also fearful (of God), 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 Not this way – this is the advice. 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted and purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 noble and most virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Out of what did Allah create him? 18 From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him; 19 Then maketh the way easy for him, 20 and in the end He causes him to die and brings him to the grave; 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will raise him up (again). 22 No! Man has not yet accomplished what He commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 Thereafter We cleave the earth in clefts, 26 then caused the grain to grow out of it, 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 And olives and palms 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 Mother and father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 Some faces will shine, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 Veiled in darkness, 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
