Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 therein every wise bidding 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 'Then set thou forth with My servants in a watch of the night; surely you will be followed. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 and good things in which they took delight. 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
