We sent an inspiration to Moses: "Travel by night with My servants, and strike a dry path for them through the sea, without fear of being overtaken (by Pharaoh) and without (any other) fear." 77 So Pharaoh pursued them with his soldiers, and there covered them from the sea that which covered them, 78 And Fir'awn led his nation astray, and guided them not. 79 O Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and we made a covenant with you on the holy mountain's side, and sent down on you the manna and the quails, 80 "Partake of the good things which We have provided for you as sustenance, but do not transgress therein the bounds of equity lest My condemnation fall upon you: for, he upon whom My condemnation falls has indeed thrown himself into utter ruin!" 81 I am All-forgiving to the righteously striving believers who repent and follow the right guidance. 82 ۞ "And what made you hasten from your people, O Musa (Moses)?" 83 He said: They are here on my track and I hastened on to Thee, my Lord, that Thou mightest be pleased. 84 He said: "We have put your people on trial in your absence; and Sameri has led them astray." 85 Then Moses returned very angry and sorrowful to his people, saying, 'My people, did your Lord not promise a fair promise to you? Did the time of the covenant seem so long to you, or did you desire that anger should alight on you from your Lord, so that you failed in your tryst with me?' 86 They said: "We broke not the promise to you, of our own will, but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh)] people, then we cast them (into the fire), and that was what As-Samiri suggested." 87 So he brought forth for them a calf, a (mere) body, which had a mooing sound, so they said: This is your god and the god of Musa, but he forgot. 88 Why did they not see that it could not give them any response and had no power to harm or benefit them? 89
