▼ 56 The Inevitable
Al-Waaqe'ah 2 of 3
a large throng from the ancients, 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Tell them, (O Prophet): “The earlier ones and the later ones 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 And drink over it scalding water, 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it a reminder and an advantage for the wayfarers of the desert. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
