The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By oath of the night when it covers 1 and the day as it rises bright! 2 and by that (Power) which created the male and female, 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 And accepts the best, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 But save him who fears 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 And none hath with him any favour for reward, 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
