(The tribe of) A’ad denied the Noble Messengers. 123 when their brother Hood said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 124 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 125 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 126 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 127 Do you build over each high place a sign to amuse yourselves! 128 and make for yourselves mighty castles, [hoping] that you might become immortal? 129 When you assault, you assault like tyrants! 130 "Be, then, conscious of God and pay heed unto me: 131 Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know, 132 Gave you increase of cattle and sons, 133 gardens, and springs. 134 Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a dreadful Day' 135 [But] they answered. "It is all one to us whether thou preachest [something new] or art not of those who [like to] preach. 136 this is nothing but the habit of the ancients, 137 and we shall not be punished." 138 Eventually they gave the lie to him and We destroyed them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 139 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 140
