The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By oath of the night when it covers 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 By Him Who hath created the male and the female, 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 And testifieth to the Good, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
