The chiefs of the people of Fir'awn said: verily this is a magician knowing. 109 "He wishes to drive you away from the land. So what do you advise?" 110 The others suggested holding Moses and his brother off and sending to all the cities 111 who shall bring before thee every sorcerer of great knowledge." 112 And the magicians came to Pharaoh and said: 'Shall we have a reward if we win?' 113 He said, “Yes, and you will then become close to me.” 114 Then they said: 'O Moses, will you [first] throw your rod, or shall we throw?' 115 He said: Throw! And when they threw they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and overawed them, and produced a mighty spell. 116 And We inspired Moses (saying): Throw thy staff! And lo! it swallowed up their lying show. 117 ۞ Thus was the truth established, and their doings proved in vain. 118 they were defeated and turned belittled, 119 The sorcerers fell to the ground in homage, 120 and said, "We believe in the Lord of the Universe, 121 the Lord of Moses and Aaron." 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 Surely I shall have your hands and feet cut off upon alternate sides. Then I shall crucify you every one. 124 They replied, "We shall surely return to our Lord. 125 Will you punish us just because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us? Our Lord! Shower us with perseverance and cause us to die as those who have submitted [to You].' 126
