We afflicted the people of Pharaoh with famine and dearth of everything that they might take heed. 130 But whenever good befell them, they said: This is ours; and whenever evil smote them they ascribed it to the evil auspices of Moses and those with him. Surely their evil auspice was only with Allah. But most of them knew not. 131 And said, “You may come with any sign to us, in order to cast a magic spell on us – yet by no means are we going to believe in you.” 132 Then We afflicted them with a great flood and locusts, and the lice, and the frogs, and the blood. All these were distinct signs and yet they remained haughty. They were a wicked people. 133 And whensoever a plague fell on them, they said: O Musa! supplicate thy Lord for us, by that which He hath covenanted with thee; surely if thou remove the plague from us we will surely believe in thee, and we will send away with thee the Children of Isra'il. 134 Consequently whenever We lifted the punishment from them for a term which they must reach, they used to then turn away. 135 So We took retribution from them, and We drowned them in the sea because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them. 136 And We caused the people who had been oppressed to inherit the eastern regions of the land and the western ones, which We had blessed. And the good word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of what they had patiently endured. And We destroyed [all] that Pharaoh and his people were producing and what they had been building. 137 And We brought the Children of Israel over the sea, and they came upon a people cleaving to idols they had. They said, 'Moses, make for us a god, as they have gods.' Said he, 'You are surely a people who are ignorant. 138 "These people and their ways will surely be destroyed, for false is what they practise. 139 He said: What! shall I seek for you a god other than Allah while He has made you excel (all) created things? 140 And recall what time We delivered you from the house of Fir'awn perpetrating on you terrible torment, slaying your sons and letting your women live, and therein was a trial from your Lord, tremendous. 141
