We afflicted Pharaoh's people with shortages of food and famine so that they might take heed, 130 Yet when good came their way they said: "It is our due;" but when misfortune befell them they put the omen down to Moses and those who were with him. But surely the omen was with God, yet most of them did not understand. 131 They said: 'Whatever sign you bring to us, to cast a spell upon us, we will not believe in you' 132 We sent upon them widespread calamities: floods of locusts, lice, frogs, and blood. All were distinct miracles but these criminals all the time remained proud. 133 And when the plague fell upon them, they said: O Musa! pray for us to your Lord as He has promised with you, if you remove the plague from us, we will certainly believe in you and we will certainly send away with you the children of Israel. 134 But every time We removed the penalty from them according to a fixed term which they had to fulfil,- Behold! they broke their word! 135 So We punished them and drowned them in the sea, for they had belied Our signs and gave no heed to them. 136 And We made the people who were considered weak to inherit the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof which We have blessed. And the fair Word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, because of their endurance. And We destroyed completely all the great works and buildings which Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his people erected. 137 And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not. 138 (As to) these, surely that about which they are shall be brought to naught and that which they do is vain. 139 "Do you want me to seek for you," he said, "a god other than God, when He has exalted you over all the nations of the world? 140 And (remember) when We rescued you from Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, who were afflicting you with the worst torment, killing your sons and letting your women live. And in that was a great trial from your Lord. 141
