We afflicted the people of Pharaoh with hard times and with poor harvest that they may heed. 130 But whenever prosperity came their way, they said: 'This is our due.' And whatever hardship befell them, they attributed it to the misfortune of Moses and those who followed him. Surely, their misfortune had been decreed by Allah - but most of them do not know that. 131 And they said: whatsoever thou mayest bring unto us of the nature of a sign wherewith to enchant us, in thee we are not going to be believers 132 Thereupon We let loose upon them floods, and [plagues of] locusts, and lice, and frogs, and [water turning into] blood - distinct signs [all]: but they gloried in their arrogance, for they were people lost in sin. 133 And when the plague smote them, they said: 'Moses, pray to your Lord for us invoking the promise He has made with you. If you lift the plague from us, we will believe in you and let the Children of Israel go with you' 134 But every time We removed the penalty from them according to a fixed term which they had to fulfil,- Behold! they broke their word! 135 Therefore We inflicted retribution on them and drowned them in the sea because they rejected Our signs and were heedless of them. 136 And We caused the folk who were despised to inherit the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof which We had blessed. And the fair word of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of their endurance; and We annihilated (all) that Pharaoh and his folk had done and that they had contrived. 137 And We brought the Children of Israel over the sea, and they came upon a people cleaving to idols they had. They said, 'Moses, make for us a god, as they have gods.' Said he, 'You are surely a people who are ignorant. 138 what they are engaged in is doomed to destruction and all their works are in vain." 139 [And] he said: "Am I to seek for you a deity other than God, although it is He who has favoured you above all other people?" 140 And remember We rescued you from Pharaoh's people, who afflicted you with the worst of penalties, who slew your male children and saved alive your females: in that was a momentous trial from your Lord. 141
