In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif. Lam. Ra. These are verses of the Scripture and a plain Reading. 1 Oft times would those who disbelieve fain that they had been Muslims. 2 Let them eat and enjoy; and let their hopes deceive them, soon they shall know. 3 Never did We destroy a population that had not a term decreed and assigned beforehand. 4 Every nation can only live for the time appointed for it. 5 They say: 'You to whom the Remembrance is sent down, you are indeed mad. 6 Why bringest thou not angels unto us if thou art of the truthtellers! 7 We do not send down the angels except with truth; and the disbelievers would not then be reprieved. 8 We have sent down this Exposition, and We will guard it. 9 We did send messengers before thee amongst the religious sects of old: 10 And never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him. 11 Even so do We [now] cause this [scorn of Our message] to pervade the hearts of those who are lost in sin, 12 They do not believe in it, and indeed the example of the former people has already passed. 13 And even if We opened to them a gate from the heaven and they were to continue ascending thereto, 14 They would certainly say: Only our eyes have been covered over, rather we are an enchanted people. 15

When reading the Colorful Quran in English transliterated Arabic mode, you may not notice that there is an algorithm designed to match the pause requirements of the original Arabic scripture, (waqf signs). As you may know, the original Arabic Quran has five main types of pauses, (waqf) signs. (1) Compulsory break, where the transliteration uses a full stop. (2) Optional pause with the preference for pausing, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a probability of two thirds. (3) Optional stop with an equal preference for pausing and resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a half-half probability. (4) Optional pause with the preference for resuming, where the transliteration uses a comma that may appear with a chance of one third. (5) Attraction pause, also called hugging, or (mu’anaka) sign, where it is compulsory to pause at either one of two nearby positions, but not both; where the transliteration inserts a comma at either one of the two locations with a half-half probability.
