AND, INDEED, We have created man out of sounding clay, out of dark-slime transmuted 26 and the jinn before (the human being) of smokeless fire. 27 Recall when your Lord said to the angels: "I will indeed bring into being a human being out of dry ringing clay wrought from black mud. 28 "So, when I have fashioned him completely and breathed into him (Adam) the soul which I created for him, then fall (you) down prostrating yourselves unto him." 29 Then the angels bowed themselves all together, 30 except iblis (father of the jinn) who refused to be one of those who prostrated themselves. 31 He said: O Iblis! What aileth thee that thou art not among the prostrate? 32 Said he, 'I would never bow myself before a mortal whom Thou hast created of a clay of mud moulded.' 33 "Go hence, execrable," (said the Lord), "from this place, 34 "And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)." 35 Iblis said: "My Lord! Grant me respite till the Day when they will be resurrected." 36 "You are among the reprieved," (said the Lord), 37 unto the day of a known time.' 38 Said he, 'My Lord, for Thy perverting me I shall deck all fair to them in the earth, and I shall pervert them, all together, 39 "Except Your chosen, (guided) slaves among them." 40 He (Allah) said: 'This is for Me the Right Path 41 “Indeed you do not have any power over My bondmen, except those wanderers who follow you.” (The devil is unsuccessful in tempting Allah’s chosen bondmen to commit sin.) 42 And indeed hell is the promise for all of them. 43 To it are seven gates: for each of those gates is a (special) class (of sinners) assigned. 44
