We created man out of dry clay, from moulded mud, 26 and the jinn We had created before from flaming fire. 27 And lo! Thy Sustainer said unto the angels: "Behold, I am about to create mortal man out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted; 28 And when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, bow before him in homage;" 29 Thereupon the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together, 30 Except Iblees, he refused to be with those who prostrated. 31 [Allah] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?" 32 He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud." 33 Said He: "Go forth, then, from this [angelic state]: for, behold, thou art [henceforth] accursed, 34 And surely on you is curse until the day of judgment. 35 "O my Lord," said he, "give me respite till the day the dead are raised." 36 Allah said: verily then thou art of the respited: 37 "Till the predetermined time." 38 (Iblis) said: "O my Lord! because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong,- 39 But not such of them as are Thy bondmen single-hearted. 40 He (Allah) said: 'This is for Me the Right Path 41 No power shall you have over (all) My creatures except those who fall into error and follow you, 42 And verily, Hell is the promised abode for them all! 43 There are seven gates in it, and to each gate a portion of them has been allotted. 44
