So they set out, until when they had embarked on the ship, al-Khidh r tore it open. [Moses] said, "Have you torn it open to drown its people? You have certainly done a grave thing." 71 He said, “Did I not say that you will never be able to patiently stay with me?” 72 Said Moosa, “Do not apprehend me upon my forgetting, and do not impose difficulty on me in my task.” 73 And so the two went on, till, when they met a young man, [the sage] slew him - [whereupon Moses] exclaimed: "Hast thou slain an innocent human being without [his having taken] another man's life? Indeed, thou hast done a terrible thing!" 74 ۞ He said: Did I not tell thee that thou couldst not bear with me? 75 Said [Moses]: "If, after this, I should ever question thee, keep me not in thy company: [for by] now thou hast heard enough excuses from me." 76 So they went on until they came to a town. They asked its people for food, but were refused hospitality. They found a wall in the town which was about to fall down. His companion buttressed it and Moses said, "Had you wished, you could have demanded payment for your labours." 77 He said: This shall be separation between me and you; now I will inform you of the significance of that with which you could not have patience. 78 "As for that boat, it belonged to some needy people who toiled upon the sea - and I desired to damage it because [I knew that] behind them was a king who is wont to seize every boat by brute force. 79 "And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared lest he should oppress them by rebellion and disbelief. 80 and so we desired that their Sustainer grant them in his stead [a child] of greater purity than him, and closer [to them] in loving tenderness. 81 And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure belonging to them, and their father was a righteous man; so your Lord desired that they should attain their maturity and take out their treasure, a mercy from your Lord, and I did not do it of my own accord. This is the significance of that with which you could not have patience. 82
