Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf, Ha, Ya, 'Ayn, Sad. 1 A mention of the mercy of thy Lord unto His servant Zachariah. 2 when he called upon his Lord secretly 3 And said: "O my Lord, my bones decay, my head is white and hoary, yet in calling You, O Lord, I have never been deprived. 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 "(One that) will (truly) represent me, and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!" 6 “O Zakaria! We give you the glad tidings of a son whose name is Yahya (John) – before him, We have not created anyone of this name.” 7 He said: O my Lord! in what wise shall there be for me a boy, whereas my wife hath been barren, and surely have reached an age of extreme degree? 8 He said: "So (it will be). Your Lord says; It is easy for Me. Certainly I have created you before, when you had been nothing!" 9 He said, 'Lord, appoint to me some sign.' Said He, 'Thy sign is that thou shall not speak to men, though being without fault, three nights.' 10 So he came from the chamber to his people, and suggested to them (by signs) to sing the praises of the Lord morning and evening. 11 We commanded John, Zachariah's son, to follow the guidance of the Lord with due steadfastness. We gave knowledge and wisdom to John during his childhood. 12 We gave him compassion and purity. He was a pious human being, 13 and dutiful towards his parents and was not haughty or disobedient. 14 He was born and died in peace and will be brought back to life again in peace. 15
