We commanded Moses: "Journey by night with Our creatures, and strike a dry path for them through the sea. Do not fear being overtaken, nor have dread of any thing." 77 And Firon followed them with his armies, so there came upon them of the sea that which came upon them. 78 The Pharaoh and his people had gone away from guidance. 79 O Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and we made a covenant with you on the holy mountain's side, and sent down on you the manna and the quails, 80 [Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen." 81 And most surely I am most Forgiving to him who repents and believes and does good, then continues to follow the right direction. 82 ۞ The Lord asked, "Moses, what made you attend your appointment with Me before your people?" 83 He said: "They are close on my footsteps, and I hastened to You, O my Lord, that You might be pleased." 84 He said: verily We have tempted thy people after thee, and the Samiri hath led them astray. 85 Moses returned to his people full of wrath and grief, and said: "My people! Has your Lord not made good an excellent promise He made to you? And has a long time passed since those promises were fulfilled? Or was it to incur the wrath of your Lord that you broke your promise with me?" 86 They replied, "We did not go against our promise with you out of our own accord. We were forced to carry people's ornaments. We threw them away and so did the Samiri. 87 "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten!" 88 Did they not see that it did not give them any answer, nor had it power to do them harm or bring them gain? 89
