And We divinely inspired Moosa that, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night and strike a dry path in the sea for them, you shall have no fear of Firaun getting to you, nor any danger.” 77 The Pharaoh and his army chased Moses and his people but were drowned by the sea. 78 Pharaoh led his people astray instead of leading them aright. 79 O Children of Israel! We delivered you from your enemy, and we made a covenant with you on the holy mountain's side, and sent down on you the manna and the quails, 80 "Eat from the wholesome things with which We have provided you but do not transgress, lest you should incur My wrath." [We said], "He that incurs My wrath shall surely be ruined. 81 And verily I am the Most Forgiving unto whomsoever repenteth and believeth and worketh righteously, and thereafter letteth himself remain guided. 82 ۞ [AND GOD SAID:] "Now what has caused thee, O Moses, to leave thy people behind in so great a haste?" 83 He said, "They are following in my footsteps, while I have hastened to You, my Lord, to please You." 84 He said: "We have put your people on trial in your absence; and Sameri has led them astray." 85 Then Musa (Moses) returned to his people in a state of anger and sorrow. He said: "O my people! Did not your Lord promise you a fair promise? Did then the promise seem to you long in coming? Or did you desire that wrath should descend from your Lord on you, so you broke your promise to me (i.e. disbelieving in Allah and worshipping the calf)?" 86 They said: "We broke not the promise to thee, as far as lay in our power: but we were made to carry the weight of the ornaments of the (whole) people, and we threw them (into the fire), and that was what the Samiri suggested. 87 "Then he brought out (of the fire) before the (people) the image of a calf: It seemed to low: so they said: This is your god, and the god of Moses, but (Moses) has forgotten!" 88 Why did they not see that [the thing] could not give them any response, and had no power to harm or to benefit them? 89
