۞ Before this We gave Abraham his virtue, for We knew him. 51 When he said to his father and his people: "What are these images, to which you are devoted?" 52 They said, 'We found our fathers serving them.' 53 He said, 'Then assuredly you and your fathers have been in manifest error.' 54 They said: 'Is it the truth you have brought us, or are you one of those that play' 55 He said: Nay! your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who brought them into existence, and I am of those who bear witness to this: 56 And, by Allah, I shall circumvent your idols after ye have gone away and turned your backs. 57 So he broke them to pieces, (all) except the biggest of them, that they might turn to it. 58 They said: Who hath done this to our gods? Surely it must be some evil-doer. 59 They said: We heard a youth called Ibrahim speak of them. 60 Their chiefs said, "Bring him before the eyes of the people and let them testify that he has spoken against the idols." 61 [And when he came.] they asked: "Hast thou done this to our gods, O Abraham?" 62 He said, 'No; it was this great one of them that did it. Question them; if they are able to speak!' 63 So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!" 64 Thereafter they were made to turn over upon their heads, saying, assuredly thou knowest that they speak not. 65 He said, "Then do you worship instead of Allah that which does not benefit you at all or harm you? 66 "Fie upon you, and upon that which you worship besides Allah! Have you then no sense?" 67 They said, "Burn him and protect your gods, If ye do (anything at all)!" 68 We said, "O Fire! be thou cool, and (a means of) safety for Abraham!" 69 Then they sought a stratagem against him: but We made them the ones that lost most! 70 And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds. 71 And We bestowed on him Isaac and, as an additional gift, (a grandson), Jacob, and We made righteous men of every one (of them). 72 And We made them Imams who guided (people) by Our command, and We revealed to them the doing of good and the keeping up of prayer and the giving of the alms, and Us (alone) did they serve; 73 To Lot We gave wisdom and knowledge, and saved him from a people who acted villainously and were certainly wicked and disobedient. 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
