(Pharaoh) said to the Chiefs around him: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed: 34 Who desires to turn you out of your land with his magic; what is it then that you advise? 35 They said, 'Put him and his brother off a while, and send among the cities musterers, 36 That they should bring to you every skillful magician. 37 And so the sorcerers were assembled at a set time on a certain day, 38 And it was said unto the people: Are ye (also) gathering? 39 (They said): Aye, so that we may follow the wizards if they are the winners. 40 And when the magicians came, they said to Firon: Shall we get a reward if we are the vanquishers? 41 Answered he: "Yea - and verily, in that case you shall be among those who are near unto me. 42 Moses said to them: "Cast what you have to cast." 43 Then they threw down their cords and their staves and said: By Pharaoh's might, lo! we verily are the winners. 44 Then Moses cast down his staff and it swallowed up their lying invention, 45 so the sorcerers were cast down, bowing themselves. 46 And said: "We (affirm and) believe in the Lord of all the worlds, 47 the Lord of Moses and Aaron." 48 The Pharaoh said, "You believed without my permission? He seems to be your chief who has taught you magic. But you will soon know (the result of what you have done). I shall certainly cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides and crucify you all together." 49 They said, 'There is no harm; surely unto our Lord we are turning. 50 Behold, we [but] ardently desire that our Sustainer forgive us our faults in return for our having been foremost among the believers!" 51
