The 'Ad (people) rejected the messengers. 123 When their brother Hud said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 124 "Verily! I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 125 So fear Allah and obey me. 126 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 127 "Will you, in your wanton folly, build [idolatrous] altars on every height, 128 And you make strong fortresses that perhaps you may 129 When you assault, you assault like tyrants. 130 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 131 Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know, 132 He has given you cattle, children, 133 gardens and fountains. 134 for, verily, I fear lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 135 They said, "Whether you preach to us or not, 136 this is nothing but a habit of the ancients: 137 “And we will not be punished.” 138 And so they gave him the lie: and thereupon We destroyed them. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 139 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 140
