The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 But, verily, thy Sustainer - He alone - is almighty, a dispenser of grace! 159
