Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 Within gardens and springs 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 You are nothing but a man like us. Bring us a token if you speak the truth." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
