The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 “You are just a human like us; therefore bring some sign if you are truthful.” 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
