Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 “I am indeed a trustworthy Noble Messenger of Allah to you.” 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 But they killed her, and then they became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
