[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 And I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds: 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
