Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 “In gardens and water springs?” 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 "And ye carve houses out of (rocky) mountains with great skill. 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they cruelly slaughtered her - and then they had cause to regret it: 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
