Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me; 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
