The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Your Lord is Majestic and All-merciful. 159
