Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 Behold, their brother Salih said to them: "Will you not fear (Allah)? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 "Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] in the midst of what you have here and now? 146 Within gardens and springs 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 The punishment therefore seized them; indeed in this is a sign; and most of them were not believers. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
