The Romans (Al-Room)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Mim. 1 The Romans have been defeated (by the Persians) 2 In a near land, and they, after being vanquished, shall overcome, 3 Within a few (up to nine) years time; only for Allah is the command, before and after; and the believers will rejoice on that day. 4 in the victory of Allah. Allah gives victory to whosoever He will, and He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 5 (It is) the promise of Allah. Never does Allah depart from His promise: but most men understand not. 6 They know but the outer (things) in the life of this world: but of the End of things they are heedless. 7 Do they not think deeply (in their ownselves) about themselves (how Allah created them from nothing, and similarly He will resurrect them)? Allah has created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, except with truth and for an appointed term. And indeed many of mankind deny the Meeting with their Lord. [See Tafsir At-Tabari, Part 21, Page 24]. 8 Have they not travelled through the land and seen what end their predecessors met? They were mightier than them: they cultivated the earth more and built more upon it than these have ever built. Their own messengers also came to them with clear signs: God did not wrong them; they wronged themselves. 9 Then evil was the consequence to those who dealt in evil, because they denied the revelations of Allah and made a mock of them. 10
