We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said: 'I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds' 46 But when he brought them Our signs, lo, they laughed at them. 47 (Even though) each miracle that We showed them was greater than the other. So We seized them with chastisement so that they may turn back. 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 Am I not better than this contemptible man who can hardly make his meaning clear: 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous people. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them a precedent and example to the later generations. 56
