Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book. 2 Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no worship except for Him – He gives life and causes death; your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And lo! I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me to death. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 But then, [when they beset him with their enmity,] he called out to his Sustainer, "These are [indeed] people lost in sin!" 22 God said, "Set out with My servants by night, for you will certainly be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
