Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the clear Book, 2 Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning - 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 Wait, then, for the Day when the sky brings forth plainly visible clouds of smoke. 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 And if ye will not believe in me, then let me alone. 21 And he called to his Lord, saying, 'These are a sinful people.' 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
