Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 We have sent it down in a blessed night (We are ever warning) 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke. 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 [Still,] behold, We shall postpone this suffering for a little while, although you are bound to revert [to your evil ways: but] 15 The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution. 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 And saying: Be not proud against Allah. Lo! I bring you a clear warrant. 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone." 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 (The reply came:) "March forth with My Servants by night: for ye are sure to be pursued. 23 (Cross and) leave the sea undisturbed. The (pursuing) hosts will surely be drowned," 24 How many gardens and water-springs they left behind! 25 and sown fields and splendid mansions, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 The sky nor the earth cried for them, nor were they given respite. 29
