Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 Therein every wise affair is made distinct, 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 the Lord of the heavens and the earth and of all that is between them: if you would only have sure faith. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful punishment. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 One day We shall seize you with a mighty onslaught: We will indeed (then) exact Retribution! 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 Saying: Deliver to me the servants of Allah, surely I am a faithful apostle to you, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he called to his Lord: "These are a sinful people." 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many gardens did they leave behind, and how many fountains 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
