Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 In the (Night) is made distinct every affair of wisdom, 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 So wait thou the day whereon the heaven will bring forth a manifest smoke: 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 and they turned away, saying, "He is a trained and insane person". 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 Do not think yourselves to be above God: I have come to you with clear authority. 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 [And so they perished: and] how many gardens did they leave behind, and water-runnels, 25 And fields and stately mansions, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
