Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear; 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 by Our command. Verily, We were set to send a Messenger 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Lo! He, even He is the Hearer, the Knower, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all between them, if ye (but) have an assured faith. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How can there be an admonition unto them, when surely there came unto them an apostle manifest! 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 We are removing the punishment a little, but you revert. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 "Deliver the creatures of God to me. I am the trusted messenger sent to you. 18 and, 'Rise not up against God; behold, I come to you with a clear authority, 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night – you will be pursued.” 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 and the life of ease in which they took delight! 27 Such was their end, and what had been theirs We gave to other people to inherit. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
